Default How easy is it to transfer data from old to new hard drive?

I upgraded my slow pc to something a lot quicker recently apart from fitting a new hard drive. I am still using the original 7.5 gb and I bought a 40gb but haven't had the courage to fit the new one as I want to transfer old hd contents onto the new.

As I am not sure how easy this is I have not attempted it.

Would a better option be an external drive? Can I transfer old data easily onto that?

Any advice would be welcomed.
