Is there any knight-in-shining-armor out there who can rescue me from my perilous and inevitable failures to install the wonderfull GCC. If you are unfamiliar, this is basically the all-in-wonder C++ programming compiler for Linux.

Heck, if there's anyone who can give me a comprehensive tutorial on Ubuntu installations from source and tar files that'd be great. And yes, I know how to "un-tar".
