dont jump to conclusions about the harddrive, it could be an expensive needless repair.try simply using the windows cd to repair the operating system.
to do this, go to bios and change primary boot device to CD/DVD, insert the windows cd and reboot.
make sure to change it back because if you ever restart the pc with a cd in the drive it slows it down a bit

I work at Circuit City in the Technology department and thus work hand in hand with all of our techs and I have heard of this problem before. I assume she is running Vista on there since it is a brand new laptop. I am making that assumption because all of the new laptops we sell in the store, are all running at least Vista Basic. Anyways, what you are experiencing is not a problem at all. Some computers may do that but just leave the blue screen up for a while and it will eventually go away. this is because the initial setup of vista takes a little longer than usual to get a couple custom hardware settings configured. My advice is to just let it run at the blue screen for a while and repost here to let me know if it solved your problem or not.

when you boot the machine up again press f8 and select disable restart on system error or something like that (i dont remember exactly). when the machine blue screens again you should be able to read the error.

you're looking for a number that looks like this 0x000000**

where ** is letters/numbers. post that up and it should help to diagnose the problem better
