32b vs64b

for xp pro or vista what is the difference between the two. Is there any harm in using a 64 bit or do you need speial parts??

Unless you have a 64bit processor, you can't use the 64bit OS. But even if you do, I wouldn't suggest getting it due to many compatibility issues.
