Default 680i and ram voltage question

i have read that with the evga 680i and corsiar 2.1 volt RAM the board might not POST because of the voltage. is this true, because as long as it POSTS you can just change the voltage, but i have read that another cheap stick is needed to get it to POST to change the voltages for the new sticks.
