Default External monitor problem?

I have just connected an external monitor to my laptop. However, when I try to watch movies, I can't see the picture on the monitor, but I can see it on the laptop screen itself. I tried this in Windows Media Player as well, and the same result occurred. Are there any settings I might need to change?

Are you connecting this monitor through a monitor connection on the back or through an s-video cable? If its through a monitor connection on the back of the lap top, right click on desktop, go to properties and there should be a drop down menu for selecting monitors, only one should be turned on, change that to 2. If its s-video, hold down the Fn button and the crt/lcd button and there should be a pop-up asking for tv, tv and monitor or just monitor.
