Default Can not retrieve important files off hard drive

Hi,

I have a 64-bit AMD that was causing ethernet issues with x64. I decided to re-install XP 32-bit but then ran into problems during the install.

To make a long story short, I accidentally put a version of windows on my backup hard drive where I moved my files I wanted to keep. I had a friend helping me who did things that may have caused this problem.

I can see that the files are still on the hard drive because the disk spaced is used up but I can not get to them. Would anyone know how I can retrieve those files?

I am not very computer savvy but I am willing to try anything here.

I am desperate to get these files back. Somebody please help me.

Thank you

*edit* I have tried researching this topic without my luck. I am stupid thus unable to remember which hard drive of the two is having the problem. One is a Maxtor 5A250J 0 and the other is WDC WD2500JS-22MHB0. I believe it is a 250 gb hard drive but right now the file size says it is 39 gb.
