Default Burning AVI's to DVD's

I know there are a million topics about converting, but can anything burn straight the file straight to a dvd so it is playable in a dvd player, and is free?
i know smart dvd creator can do it but the trial software doesnt do the full movie and if i can get some thing without paying for it that would be better.
thanx
