Anyone ever taken online guitar lessons?
I found a site that has videos, along with interactive tabliture that coincides with the lesson for $30 a month, which would be cheaper than $20 a week lessons at guitar center. Anyone ever do computer-based guitar lessons, or know anyone who has? Seems like a good way to learn, so long as you actually discipline yourself to keep up with them and practice. Just wondering if anyone else has tried them. |

bit of a late reply lol but, here goes.
i cant see any good behind it honestly. the point of having guitar lessons is having a teacher beside you to correct everything you do wrong. with videos you could still miss some things and not realize it. however i do realize how expensive lessons can be. when i was taking them it was $20 for and hour a week. |

you should ask this question at yahoo answers.... anyway, ive learned lots of stuff frm ultimate guiatar.com for free, i dont see a reason why u should pay for online lessons, if you wanna take lessons, then do it in person. since you are paying |

I taught myself with the help of chord charts, guitar magazines which always have lessons and tab, altho not really for beginners, its more intermediate. Once you get better, play along with you favourite cd's. Learn the important chords...no that doesn't include E7#9. Active Musician seems pretty good for online lessons etc. But yeah, learn those chords, get familiar with your fretboard, learn the little shape patterns that develop. Best thing you could do is play with other musicians at ur level, even a little higher.

i would use the online lessons as guidelines. it will probably show you the fundamentals of playing.
i think the biggest issue with learning an instrument (or anything really) is natural skill or aptitude for it. some people can just teach themselves all together. some can read a book, or take an online class, to learn the basics, and go with it from there. yet others may have to have a teacher next to them to help them hands-on. i dont think there is a best or worse way to go...it just depends on the individual. if you can learn stuff from reading or watching, and then go do it, then you shouldnt have a problem using the videos. but if you usually need hands-on assistance with learning new things, you might be better off to pay for the real lessons. EDIT: or put an ad in the paper asking if anyone could teach you...probably be cheap, and you can get hands-on guidance. |

I agree. Very good advice. You could give lessons with someone a go, if you get something out of it then good, if not then at least you can try other methods. Teachers are good cuz they can spot bad technique before it develops into bad habits. Just remember that learning an instrument is a commitment, you have to put in the hard yards to be good, altho that doesn't mean sitting in ur bedroom playing scales 8 hours a day. One more thing...one VERY bad habit is to play only what ur comfortable playing. To get better and better you need to push your boundaries, learn new stuff, learn different styles.

Teach yourself, trust me on this. I originally took lessons and it frustrated me so much that I put down my guitar for two years. When I got an urge to play one day, I went to a site that had a tutorial on how to read all types of music, from note to tab. I got used to the sounds and such, and ended up being fairly good at guitar.
