i have adsl 310kbps but im wondering why i can only download at max 40kbps? where is the rest of the speed at? And another thing if im online downloading does it slow down my downloads when someone is uploading?

pc club guy said DSL not cable. There is no sharing of bandwidth like you have with cable. They call it leased lines, where you are given a line dedicated for use 24 hours a day (dedicated line). The distance your home is from your telephone companies building also determines the speed of DSL. The farther away you are the slower the speeds. I would suggest calling your ISP and let the help determine whether or not the problem is on their end, your yours.

Whereas if my nextdoor neighbor and I both have cable connections, if he is downloading a bunch of music, my connection speeds might suffer....

thats not right, cable is dedicated as well, i have cable and maybe 20 people around me have it to and its 1 cable per house, it never drops in speed.
maybe because im in scotland and not in america ![]() EDIT im an ass, i thaught u meant the connection cable oops
