Default Write a program to check e-mail

I was wondering if there is any way to write a program to check multiple web-based e-mail addresses in either a language that Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 supports or one that you can write in Notepad like html, c++ or php? Im a college freshman in a C++ programming course so I know a little bit of programming commands, but not much.
