Acer Aspire 1692WLMI
512MB DDR2, support dual-channel. Current memory: 512MB (2x256MB) Maximum: 1024 MB Support: 2048 MB Supported type: DIMM; SDRAM will it work if i remove one ram(256MB) and add a 1GB so it will be 1280 MB? Will it be fast? reason: i want to upgrade to Vista. thanks.

If you remove one then you loose dual-channel. You will loose performance.

Well first realize more RAM doesn't give you better performance as much as just...eh...more working space. Raw performance won't be increased, but load times and all might be as a swap file isn't as needed.
As for having two of the same, you will not loose performance as long as the RAM's the same speed and all as the previous.
