i have no problems with setting up home networks(i have had 3 desktops and laptop networked at home many times over) but i have just installed a fresh copy of xp(it was win2000pro before) onto one of my towers in readyness for buying a product key next week from local computer shop.
as i'm in the 30 day activation period.- does this prevent the networking capabilities from working until it's fully activated? as i have checked all the settings(inc firewall) but still no joy with the tower in question. ![]() |

You need either XP Professional or XP Media Centre - which is based on Pro - to be able to network via a domain, Home has this disabled.

maybe i didn't explain properly....... all i want is to be able to network all the pc's together like they used to be but !! with one of my towers running xp home currently in it's activation period it does not seem able to join the network.
as for it being home edition makes no difference as i have two other towers on the network running xp home edition and their is NO problem with them. i think you mean you need to be running pro if you want to remote desktop which is not what i want to do. |

You may be right in the fact it'll want you to activate, but to do that you need to connect to the web most of the time... And seeing as you can't well it's a bit odd...

who said i couldn't connect to the web? it's my LAN i'm having issues with ,not the internet. all my pc's connect to the web , it's just the un activated one won't join my home network.
well it's not going to matter in 9 days time because i will have the new product key by then, i suppose i will just have to make do with 3 pc's for now instead of four ha ha thanks for your comments ![]() |

I had this problem until i added a password to each username and added them to the admin section on all computers on the same workgroup then it all worked fine. XP can be a bitch with this issue. You are not limited for those 30 days but after that it will not let you boot into your windows until its activated. So that should not be your problem

thanks codeman0013 , i will try that although it was never a problem when i was using win2000pro as the servers operating system, hey i might just save myself 40 quid and go back to using that instead, don't suppose you know how long MS are going to continue supporting win2000pro now that Vista is out?

As far as I know, the only thing that is limited before activation is the ability to get updates from Windows/Microsoft Updates.

You're probably not doing it right, but Activation has nothing to do with that.
Are you trying to network the machines on a simple home router/AP, or to a business network?
