Default task mngr processes (XP)

hi,

in XP ive been trying to minimise the amount of processes running in my system, and ive heard that you should try to have no more than 20 or so processes, and can even minimise it to 13-14 if you want without the system failing. (i dont know how accurate these numbers are, its just what ive been told)

Im currently have around 32 background processes running, and want to know what can i afford to get rid of from the list, im sure not all of them are so important (also where there is a process that can be stopped, please can you tell me what it does as well?)

Mainly, what are all the ‘svchost’?

ok the list is attached:

thanks for any help, monoman

http://www.processlibrary.com/processscan/
can i trust this software? ( i want to be really certain that software is safe when i download it, especially when its my computer settings)
please can you recommend if there is any better software than this. what software would you use on your computer to clean it up?

my freind gave me software called: 'winxp manager v4.8.5.1' which looks quite good, but i havent put it on yet, have you heard of this?

I have 34 processes running which is quite normal. There is only two that I can see that is not needed in yours.

MDM.EXE That is Microsoft Machine Debug Manager
ALCMTR.EXE That is Realtek's information gatherer, definately have to go.

I would'nt rely on a scanner but would "Google" each process and read the information given.

http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/

Security Task Manager will tell you all the running processes, some that the windows task manager doesnt see or acknowledge.

there is also a program that i cant remember exactly but its something like prockilla if you cant stop processes in task manager.

hello tft,
ive got rid of the 'ALCMTR.exe' and no problems, please tell me what 'Microsoft Machine Debug Manager' is exactly: it sounds important

also i think that norton antivirus takes up alot of memory, but obviously, i need the antivirus software

also for 'commit charge' is that how much memory i am using out of my available memory? (e.g. so i have 2462MB in total? i thought i only had 1 gig memory??)

Machine Debug Manager is if you use your machine for debugging, see link
http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/process/mdm.exe.html

Commit charge is the "maximum potential pagefile usage" this includes virtual memory so will be your real memory (1 gig) plus whatever it needs from your virtual memory setting. Windows will use whatever it needs so this figure will change.

I have Mcafee anti virus and this also takes up a lot of memory. Something we have to live with.

With any scaner it's good to double check what the scanner want to stop or delete.
Once after cleaning my registry and deleting everything what the software found without checking I had to reinstall my system.

hi,
well i wont run a process scan if it does that, i only just got my computer running!

in the link it says:
Quote:
Mdm.exe is the Machine Debug Manager, which is used by the Windows NT Option Pack and Microsoft Developer Studio to provide application debugging. When Script Debugging is enabled for Internet Explorer 4.0, the debug manager is initialized whenever Internet Explorer 4.0 is started. The Machine Debug Manager runs as a service and is loaded when your computer starts. If you do not use your computer for debugging purposes, you can safely turn off the Machine Debug Manager
what does this mean, 'using your computer for debugging purposes'? it sounds to me like this gets rid of bugs in th system, which is a good thing?

Simply check everything before you delete...
