Default Question

I just got back home from college for spring break. I tried getting the internet on my laptop and I have a connection but it's restricted. I need a network key but I don't know what it is and neither do my parents. Is there a way to fix the problem?

First things first you need a Welcome to the Computer Forum! Official Welcome Thread Please take some time to review the Forum Rules

Without the problem you are having there you would need to contact your service provider for the needed user name and password or other information for that account. You have to configure the internet and network connection according to the assigned user information unless a user name and/or password was a special request to them.

Are you trying to get the internet from a jack in your dorm? Or are you trying to go wireless?

If your trying to connect wirelessly, make a wired connection to the router. Access the router config page. Under the wireless security tab, you should be able to get the key or set up a new one.

You can also do this. Go to 192.168.2.1, 192.168.1.1 etc this will bring you to your routers page where there is all the information. The only thing is you will probably need the user name and the password to access it. Unless you didn't configure that part then it will bring you straight to your router's page where you can also change the settings.

If for some reason you can't find the key just do what Crypto said which is taking the ethernet wire out of your router and plug it in your laptop. That will make you have a connection from your modem instead of your router.

And if you really want to set up the network key just re-install the software that came with your router. Also press the reset button under your router before installing your router's software that way you are sure you won't have any problems.

Also what is the brand and model number of your router?

The Router may have the details on it, I know the British Telecom hubs do, it can be on the back or underside.

162.168.0.1 also works but 192.168.1.1 is most likely the address.

Only one works with the router, and if another one gets you someplace then its probably directing you to another router or to the modem.
