A real sound card built for gaming will take off the processing from the processor so the processor has more computing power left over for doing other tasks. Company of heros opposing fronts thats just come out, the developers have gone mad and coded it so the game sound will only run on the cpu or a creative sound card making gamers with onboard sound have serious issues with their processor performance. The only cure is a really fast dual core processor or a creative sound card.

About the additional computing power added by a X-fi card, the additional computing power is for sound processing only it's not going to run Ai and game code. Some of the sound coding is normaly done by the CPU in the case of onboard sound.
