Default DVD burner

I have a DVD writer in my computer, but I don't know whether it is a plus or a minus to write DVD's. I recently purchased some Philips DVD-R DVD's and I keep failing whilst burning in Nero at 1%. It will write CD's. It just brings up the Error, Burn Process failed at 4x. I don't know the model as it is my brothers computer.
Help would be much appreciated!

Cheers,
Nik

--Edit--

Just found out it's a SONY DVD RW DRU-510A.

Please Note: 4X DVD-RW media is not compatible for recording with your drive, please use 1X or 2X compatible DVD-RW media only.
