Default DVD Rom Autoplay and Icon problems

I've turned the registry inside out, tweaking values related to AutoPlay to no avail.

My computer will not properly autoplay: when I insert the Windows XP CD, the autoplay welcome window that normally pops up fails to show, but instead opens the disk content for browsing. Note that I've already tweaked the property page of my DVD-ROM drive and have set the autoplay to "prompt me" each time an autoplayable disk is put in, and I did NOT set that to "open files for browing" automatically. Autoplay related services are all turned on through Administrative Tools.

Also, even if I insert it, it won't change the icon of the DVD-ROM disk to whatever the disk content is (like DVD disk, Audio disk, Age of Kings: Conquerers logo, and other icons that used to show.)

I have used the Microsoft's autoplay repair utility, but it says it can't repair it due to "another service is interfering with" it, or the hardware is damaged. I highly doubt the drive is damaged, because when I installed the device on a new computer, it autoplayed correctly.

Can anyone help?

EDIT: I should add that my CD-RW drive, which usually autoplays correctly, is also suffering from the same problem. The registry key that disables CD-ROM autoplay (forgot exact name) is set to 91, and autoplay is set to 1, and autoplay disable list does not have my model listed. I highly suspect it's some malfunctioning AutoPlayHandlers. HELP!!

AFAIK, there are two modules in windows:

-autorun (automatic startup of CD using "autorun.ini" ref. file on CD/another media)
-autoplay (Microsoft's special module) - your case

I don't have an idea about solution of your problem. If I want to disable autoplay, I always go to DVD-ROM properties and select "NO ACTION" for all types of content. If I want to disable it completely, I disable(stop and disable) "Hardware Shell Detection" service(autoplay, NOT throught REGEDIT). But this have one disadvatage. After disabling this service the icons don't change as in your case. That's all I know. Sorry.
