Default Annoying HDTV Resolution Problem

alright, I'm using a dell inspiron 8100 laptop and using its monitor as well as a 27 inch insignia (720p widescreen) television as a secondary monitor hooked up via VGA output. The televison supports up to 1280 by 720 resolutions, however I can only seem to make it appear in 1024 by 768 on the television, which leaves two large black spots on each side of the display. Does any one know how to create a custom resolution so I can get the full punch from the monitor, right now the best i can do is go into widescreen mode in the television options which just creates a stretched ugly version of 1024 by 768. please help..
