is it possible to run a program that requires a cd from your harddrive? is there a registry key that you can edit that tells the computer where to look if a program needs a cd, so you could tell it to look somewhere else instead, like a folder on you hardrive? i would guess that there has to be a way somehow. does anybody know what i'm talking about and how to do it?

Daemon tools...google it and you will find it. Another possibility is Alcohol 120% but it's not for free.

DaemonTools is free and can do the job. If the disc is copy protected then you need to be able retrieve that information. Protection schemes like SafeDisc2.5+ may require certain hardware specs to perform a successful image dump
