Default Huge problem

A couple of days ago I started noticing this problem with a folder that holds half of my mp3 collection, I looked in it and only about 10% of the files were showing(show hidden files was enabled), only files that started in a numeral or a few that started with "a". The other files werent moved or deleted because they still play in itunes, and itunes still says they exist in that folder. I've been okay with that because I have all my music backed up on my ipod, today however another big problem arose. I looked in My pictures folder and it is completely empty, about 1.5gbs of jpegs and psds dissapeared from that folder and all subfolders gone. I looked in my recent documents and opened a file that existed in a subfolder of my pictures folder and it opened up, so again, the files are there they just arent showing. I tried to run a defragment and a hard drive scan but Windows got an error and wouldnt let me do either. I think my hard drive(Maxtor NTFS 80gb) is dying. If anyone could tell me how to recover the lost files(mainly the pictures) I will back them up on my ipod and get a new HD, or if there is a way to restore them and fix my hard drive that would help.

You could have a bad virus or something like that. Have you tried to run a scan? If not do that, but if the virus got a holr of your stuff, you may never see it again.

If it is a virus it hasnt deleted the files, it has just made them invisible, seeing as I can still access them through programs that already have them, like the invisible music files that still play in itunes, or the "erased" pictures that still open up through-My Recent Documents. I downloaded this program called virtual lab, its supposed to help recover lost/deleted files, I scanned my hard drive and it has found the music and picture files in the original folders, but it says they are just normal files, not unknown and not deleted files. To actually use the program to recover the files would cost over $100USD, but I want to look for an alternative, seeing as the files werent even deleted.
