Default Dolby Sound card

Hey all,

Would i notice a sound differance if i purchased this cheap sound card?

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?...37863&doy=19m3

Im currently using my onboard sound which isnt actualy that bad with my Harmon/Kardon speakers but i was thinking about getting some new 5.1 speakers and so realy i wanted to get a 5.1 sound card.

Also if i do get this card do i just insert it into my spare Pci slot, instal drivers and go or does that card need extra cables because i notice at the top of the card theres this white port

Any after market sound card is more likely to enhance sound, my wife has an sound blaster audigy se (20.00 OEM) in here computer and sounds much better than the onboard audio. Make sure to disable onboard audio in bios if you do get one and use it.

I have owned several after market sound cards and all you do is put them in an empty PCI slot and load the software and such. It is quite easy and an excellent and affordable upgrade.

As far as those additional ports, I have never used them or needed them. To be honest I never noticed them and the instructions I read never said to do anything with them either. I only use it for gaming and listening to music. though.

My card

I can't find the remote that came with it though! Arghh...

That's a CD-IN socket. I think it's used to divert some of the data down to the card without going along the ribbon, no doubt so bandwidth is better. I have one in my PC, because the old PC had 2 drives and I stole one.

Get an X-Fi one or something from PC World or similar, they're much better.

If you're getting some 5.1 card, why not look for a "good" one, like some older Sound Blaster Live. I can't see that one you posted being any better than a SB Live, and the prices would probably be about the same...

Regardless of what you get, you will notice a difference.

You're welcome.
