I had a problem where there was only one speaker working on a dell laptop i bought they had to replace the motherboard and speakers and got them working again. It sounds like your one of your speakers is either blown or not connected properly. If you still have a warranty on your laptop send it in to dell to have them fix it. Otherwise you can download new soundcard drivers for your laptop and see if that works.

This seems to be a fairly common problem among laptops... It could be as simple as a loose wire or as complex as a bad amp. If the amp is bad, you'd probably also get single channel though the headphone jack.
Have you tried to play an audio CD using an audio cable(if it even has that option)
