Default Strange problem with CD/DVD Drive

I have a Memorex CD/DVD drive that I purchased about 3 months ago. Yesterday it stopped working although my operating system says it is working properly. I'm running XP and it can't read any discs that I put in to it. I also went into DOS and tried to access it and it says that the device is not ready.
I've checked all the connections and reinstalled the drivers with no luck. Any time I put a data cd in or music cd in, it tries to access it but comes up blank showing no files. The last thing I used it for was to burn a cd for a friend of mine. I hope someone can help me with this as I can't find the receipt to exchange it. I know the drive is coming up to speed as I can feel it running after I put a disc in. Also my BIOS recognizes it with no problem. The only other thing I did before it stopped reading is move my pagefile over to my other hard drive.

Thanks
R. Voss

Sounds like a faulty drive, have you tried updating the firmware on the drive?

i think dvd drives are less reliable because they have to have 2 laser mechanisms in them, so there's more potential for damage.

My old plextor 52x plus drive that i bought back in 1999 or 2000 is still working as good as the day i bought it in my little brothers computer.

If you could buy dedicated dvd drives, i bet they'd last a lot longer.

2 lasers, one lens

an 850nm laser, and a 650nm laser

Hey, I'm having the same exact problem as Ron. I did replace mine but it still keeps doing the same thing; won't recognize any kind of CD but will play a DVD just fine. I tried all the same things Ron talked about except...updating the firmware. How and where do I do that??
I wonder if Ron ever got his working again?
Thanks, wroxx
