Default Reformating + Backing Up

what would be the best way to keep all my files, re install windows then load all my needed files back on? An external HD? or is there another way?

its on a toshiba Sattelite

I think that is the easiest way. Especially if you have loads of data to backup.
For backing up you can use Windows Backup software.
Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools.
If you are on XP Home you need to install it first as it's not installed by default.
