Default whats better 7.1 or 5.1 sound card?

i have just bought a 5.1 speaker system for my computer and wnat to get a sound card. now i know it may sound stupid but am i better off getting 5.1 or 7.1 sound card for sound quality with my speakers?

would a 5.1 speakers work with a 7.1 sound card as they seem to have better techincal specs

Asking if a 5.1 card is better than a 7.1 is like asking of a 256MB GPU is better than a 512MB GPU. I mean I think my desktop is 7.1, but I'm SURE my old Sound Blaster Live(5.1) was by far a superior card.

Yes, 5.1 speakers will work on a 7.1 card, but there's no reason to get it. If you find a good card like a SB Live that's just 5.1, I'm sure that'd work just fine.
