Exclamation SATA + new XP OEM CD = does not detect HDD setup can not go on

When I try to install an SATA HDD on my friends computer XPS from dell, well, his old one died. It does not detect the SATA drive at all and therefore, not install XP on it. How do I make it detect it?

You will need two things there. The board's software cd or a download of sata drivers for that make(Dell) and model system will be necessary for creating a driver disk namely for the other item needed namely a floppy drive. For the XP installer to even detect a sata drive you have to see those loaded when first booting up with the installation disk. That's where Vista now has the improved hardware detection as Microsoft tries to catch upto Linux on this.

Make sure in the BIOS you have the SATA settings right. Dont have them disabled.

Not yet, but, later,
try to find an option like "Configure SATA as IDE", I was told to do that with my PC and later set it back to "SMART SATA 3GB/s"

You need to know the make and model board to go to the manufacturer's support for installation drivers. Those are the ones loaded by the XP installer.

To create a driver disk from that update you first have to unpack the files using the self extracting method described there. That will create a new folder on the drive where you would browse to that and copy the driver files onto a blank floppy. First you would want to perform a full not quick format on the blank disk before copying the drvers found onto it. Hopefully since you don't have the advantage of a utility to create a disk that will still work when pressing the F6 button when the installer prompts you to load SATA/RAID drivers by browsing to the disk.
