Hey all,
I have an outdated socket 939 board and I wanted to get a new processor. I don't want to upgrade to an AM2 just yet. I started looking around and noticed these Opterons that I've only known about but never really saw in action. Are these chips good for gaming and multitasking? What are they best used for? Can anyone tell me if they are ok for gaming?

opterons are wonderful overclockers, AMD stress test them a lot harder meaning the CPU wil generally take a little more.
A friend of mine recently bought an opteron 146, stock speed of 2.0ghz and currently running at 2.8ghz which in essence is FX-57 speeds. He swapped out and AMD 4000+ to make the change and its showing improvement over that. Plus side for me is getting the 4000+ for £20

At stock clocks, you will only see a difference if the Opteron has more L2 cache than the Athlon.
The attractiveness of Opterons are their ability to overclock further than their Athlon counterparts. People have been able to get Opteron 165's (1.8GHz stock) up to 2.8GHz and beyond; Athlon 3800 X2's struggle to hit that speed, never mind go beyond.

AMD stopped production of single core Opterons, didn't they? Used to be a good budget CPU...

They were! even for server CPUs, i think AMD saw that OCers loved them. The new ones should kick ass tho.

So if I were to get one, say 2.2 or 2.4 dual core, would it be better than the one in my sig? How do they compare in gaming? Such as BF2 and such?

Of course, they arent the best anymore, but (especially a dual core) any one of them would probably be better than a little 3400+. Are you sure you have a 3400+? i though for 939 it went 3000, 3200, 3500, 3800, 4000+.

Yep I'm 100% sure it's a 3400+. They only made them for HP desktops I think and a friend was parting his out, so I snagged it. They're very rare chips actually cause they never sold for retail. It's basically a 3500+.

that should be the target market, I wish a new CPU company would pop-up. Something that was meant for gamers and OC'ers, that came with GOOD stock cooling. It wouldn't be hard to beat out intel or amd with their 1/11 chips that have damaged pins.

I just bought an Opteron 175. If you are into overclockin, I would get maybe the 170 or 165 instead of the 175. I got bad stepping and seem to have hit the wall at 2.5. I may be able to squeeze 2.6 out of her. But...overall it is an awesome processor. Great for multitasking.
