Default Issue Setting Up two Networks when adding a server!?!

I have a wireless internet connection for both my laptop and my desktop. My apartment is roughly 200 feet away from the big house in which the wireless router is located in(its a protected network, so no, im not leeching). I get a great signal on my laptop, but not so decent connection on my desktop. But that isn't really the issue, partially but not really.

I want to use the wireless connection for each computers access to the internet. But I have set up a game server on my desktop that i want the laptop to be able to access via a wired lan. I have all the rj-45 cables and a linksys 5-port switch.

The issue I am having is that they dont really want to work well with each other. If I have the wireless adapters enabled both computers want to communicate via the wireless connection. But at this point i do not have access to the routers settings to be able to forward the ports i would need ( and set up a dns to make it work) so using the wireless connection for the game server isnt really viable. On top of the hosts low internet connection wouldnt suite well for the game server to be running on anyway.

So basically I want the wireless connection to be used for the internet, and the 5 port switch connecting the two pc's to be used so the laptop can communicate with the desktop ( the server) so both users can play together. (I know how to set up all the config files for the lan, thats not the issue).

I think i have to hard code the wired lan to give each pc their own ip address for the wired nic, and have all other queries simply run through the wireless connection for internet access. But I dont know how to set that up...?...

anyone have any ideas???

edit: Just had an idea...

Can I set up an Ad-hoc Network with the wireless cards for each computer and connect that way?...hmmm...cant wait to get home to try that. But im still confused though. Would I still run into the issue of having to disable the wireless connection that was going to the router/internet when using the computers on the new ad-hoc setup? Or could I set up the ad-hoc and have the pc's use that connection to talk to each other and talk to the router for any internet type access?

Like

wireless connection 1: infrastructure (to talk to the router and get on the internet)

wireless connection 2: ad-hoc ( to hook both computers up to each other for the game server only)

If that is possible that may be the better way for me to do it. Seeing how i think my 5-port switch has been being screwy anyways. Thats why i put it in a box for the past 7 months lmao.

Still not sure how to configure the adhoc connection though...Do i go through the setup wizard and just choose adhoc and go from there?

Still woried about how to keep both connections separate and active for each use

To create a new ad hoc network open Control Panel then Network Connections, or double click on the wireless icon in the system tray (by the clock).

Click on the Wireless Network tab then the add button.

A new window will appear. Give your network a name, and check the two boxes near the bottom.

Click OK to close that window and OK again. If you try to View Wireless Networks, your changes may not be saved, so make sure to click OK first.

You need to do that on one of the wireless computers, than on the other one search for available wireless networks and that one should come up and appear as an "ad-hoc" network.
Hope that helped.
Sorry for all the posting, just figuring things out the more I go along. Im great with hardware lol but not so hot on networking (atleast not with multiple setups).

So I have an understanding on how to set up the adhoc between both computers, but still dont know if they will work together with each other at the same time...As in using adhoc to connect with each other for game server, but when i click firefox use its regular wireless connection with the router to get on the internet. With no confusion between the two. I guess something to try in a couple hours when i get home.

But any insight is def appreciated =)
