A controller card can be any number of card types like tv tuner/video capture device, or a SCSI, RAID, or SATA card for hard drive arrays while a sound card is a multimedia type device. Sound cards also have inputs for joy sticks and input type devices like analoag and digital audio sources. In that sense a sound card can be considered a multipurpose adapter.
