dirty print head

when's the last time you used the printer?

clean the heads with a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol or water

You can also use the clean print head utility that came with the drivers CD of your printer.

Doesn't help if it's really caked on there, tho.

Depends how long it's been since he's used the colors.

try taking out the cartridge and put the printing head on a paper towel soaked with boiling water, this will loosen any crusted and dried ink.this is usually the last resort before scrapping the cartridge and buying a new one, i have saved many cartridges this way, after soaking (dunk paper towel in water dont have any standing water on towel)gently blot cartridge with a dry towel insert back into printer and run printer mantinance..
