Default big help pls! ext monitor 4 laptop!

g'day

i have a laptop with broken screen. rather than fixing it for the cost around $4-5 hundreds, i just bought a 20" lcd monitor.

i encountered few problems of combining both. at start "boot-up" the layout appeared at the external monitor, but when it was about to load window the layout moved to laptop's monitor and external monitor has got message "No signal input"

Pls advise how and what should i do to get the external monitor worked with the laptop!

besides, it would be better if i could take the screen off the laptop (so not gonna be annoying with one dead screen and other one not)
i tried to unscrew it, and almost took it off... unfortunately there are 2 cables connected and i was not sure how to pull it....

PLS HELP!!!!
