Default Disk Errors

Windows xp -
If I connect a laptop hard drive via usb to my desktop and run "check disk for errors", does that include checking the boot sector? If no errors are reported, is this disk a good candidate for using as the primary drive or do I need to check it further? The reason I'm asking is that I'm getting the check cable / no operating system found error on boot. Do I need a better diagnostic? Or do I need to go a different direction like maybe the drive is not compatible with my laptop? Thanks
