Default eax confusion

with the soundblaster audigy it gives me 2 options for eax surround sound. 1 says classic 3d upmix, and one says stereo surround, i want my music and games to be split so that in games if somethings behind me i can hear it from only the back speaker where its comming from, i also want my music to be split so that if something is meant to be heard from the back that it is. which one is this?

You already titled the question with the answer there. For surround sound you would go with the surround sound option. Once the card's software is installed you can also go into the audio console at any time to change from 7.1 if that model has it, 5.1, 2 1/2, two speaker, headphones. You can also enable or disable EAX effects there from a list.

Depends on the game: some games have a Dolby Digital option at which point you'd use that over EAX. Use EAX (in game) otherwise. As for Creative's [stupid] settings, use CMSS (as opposed to CMSS2)

Should be noted that in-game options can be independent of this.

Some games surprisingly(usually found in some older ones) depend on how the card's software settings are. You should see the latest for Creative's "all in one" formula for speaker settings, EAX, and other things.

At least the XP updates saw those separated on idfferent Start menu links there instead of on different tabs in one window. Volume level control?

Right click on the taskbar, click on properties, and open the notifications tab to put a check on the "Windows" volume control there. Creative left that out of the Vista updates. Are they starting to get like MS I wonder and they "blonder"?!

Dolby digital is for the game videos.

There's no such thing as real time dolby digital encoding.

Lots of games (especially for consoles) falsely advertise "DOLBY DIGITAL" or DTS because the videos in the game are encoded in AC3.

When running the FEAR expansion pack here on the Vista installation the EAX effects are enabled. But Creative's own statement about the lack of EAX support(DirectSound®-based EAX games) with their 3/16/07 release to replace the sept.-oct. '06 beta drivers in games was confirmed when looking at the audio options. The EAX 2.0 and other items are darkened out until some newer update comes out.

Last time I checked, WarCraft III uses Bink format for their movies and the movies are single-streamed (so no option of stereo, AC3 etc)...

IIRC the "dolby digital" reference is to denote (albeit incorrectly) that the games sound engine uses native 5.1 rather than pseudo5.1... which of course varies from game to game.

Is this with the EAX hack-fix or does that not change anything?

This is being seen with the default installation of both the expansion pack and the march 16th release by Creative. Once you go into the audio setup area you will see those darkened at the bottom half on the screen. All other settings can be adjusted or enabled. The game itself has both video and sound detection in it.

The only thing ever added to any game is the sound mods used on Soldier of Forune II for weapons and making enemies dance along with a single dot instead of grid for targeting. Whatever comes with the game's dvd is used here. I haven't downloaded any patches quite yet.

What's that a reply to?

That is regarding what is seen in the options menu for FEAR there. When you open that section in the expansion pack the bottom half is for the EAX enable/disable options that are greyed out here. The Audigy 4 Pro certainly has support for those in XP for the newer 2006 addon to the 2005 game. But the game and expansion pack were both written prior to the RC1 beta of VIsta being out.
