You would be amazed how much better the sound can be with a great sound card. However, the new motherboards usually have great sound quality already. Onboard is usually enough, but if your onboard does not support surround sound, then it would definately be worthwhile to purchase a card that goes up to Dolby 7.1. I wouldn't spend my money on an extreme audio, because it would only make the sound quality go up slightly. The biggest factor in sound quality is usually not hardware, but the actual sound itself.
