Default Is my processor crazy?

I have vista premium, here is a list of what im using as far as performance:

2 gigs of ram
dual core intel pentium d processor

when i look at the CPU meter gadget on the sidebar it jumps from 1% to 55% or from 3% to 75%. I run AIM 6.1, norton internet security 2007, internet explorer, the dell support utility, windows sidebar and my lexmark productivity suite mostly all of those run in the background, along with whatever the system runs. Is my system buggin or is it all right? My RAM usage is usually in the 35-45% range. Sometimes as low as 30 sometimes as high as 50. But the CPU doesnt seem to stay idle.

All of these security softwares are buggy, especially McAfee. I am starting to come closer with AVG

To give an idea of how Norton affects power:

My laptop used to have Norton on, it could take a minute from the start button being pressed to it finishing booting. I put Sophos Anti-Virus and now 40 seconds is not unusual, but I have got the XP Pro logon sequence because I'm paranoid at school.

Your CPU usage is always going to jump around, depending on what you're doing.
Don't worry, it's normal, all processors do that.
