Default Laptop Memory Pin's

Hey,

Was just looking at laptop memory, the number of pins is stated alot, what do the number of pins mean?

The pins are how the memory gets it's power and transfers data. Most SODIMMs are 200pin now, so it's more important to know the type you need (ie DDR, DDR2).

so will all ddr be a certain amount of pins, and ddr2 another?

Both DDR and DDR2 use 200-Pin (the majority do). But you cant use DDR2 in a DDR slot, or vice versa, even if they do fit.

thanx, was just checking as ive just bought some laptop memory, and one stated it was 200 pin, but the other didnt specify, will it be ok?

They are keyed so that they aren't supposed to fit in a slot they wont work in but they keying on 200pin DDR and 200pin DDR2 is very similar so it's hard to tell which is which by looking at them. Neither should fit in the other slot though.

hmm, ok thanx, is there a way of telling whether my memory is compatible with my laptop? or shall i just try it when it comes? sorry, i just thought that all you had to get right was the speed (pc2700 etc.) and the DDR or DDR2 or DDR SDRAM

For any newer laptop that should be all you need to match. As long as you got the right type of RAM (DDR, DDR2) it should work.
