Default Securing My Hard Drive

I would like to make a partition of my hard drive secure. I want to store some of my tax files and other personal information that I want secure as soft copies on my computer. I want to make it password accessible and hide the contents of the partition from searching. Is this something that is possible, and if so, how would I go about it?

The best way to go would be to use truecrypt ( http://www.truecrypt.org/ )

Its free encryption software that allows you to create virtual encrypted hard disks only accessible with the password.
