Default Speaker problem - cant hear music

Hi all, I just purchased this system form walmart because I just got my PC up and running due to a previous virus that totally shut down my PC. Luckily, I got a free copy of Vista Home Basic from my dad because he works at Microsoft. Any way, I bought this system; the mouse and keyboard work fine, but for some reason the speakers wont work. I have a INSIGNIA D300a, and it handles Vista very nicely, no problems. Anywho, I cant get the speakers to work and have audio come from them. When I hover my mouse over the small speaker icon in my tool bar tray on the bottom right of my screen, it sais "No Audio Output Device is installed". The package only came with software for the keyboard and mouse, nothing for the speakers. I figured all I had to do was plug the speakers into my PC and plug it into the power jack. The speakers turn on, but no audio. I've checked to make sure everything was plugged in, and have restarted my PC. In the instructions it sais to right click the speaker icon and click "Open Volume Mixer" well, I right click and I see the mixer, but I'm not able to click it.

Please help me out, I really want to listen to some music but I cant, any help s appreciated, thanks!

You need to install an audio driver. So let's say if you have Realtek go to their site and install a the vista audio driver, make sure you pick the right one 32bit or 64bit vista. When I upgraded from Xp to Vista I had the same problem no sound,But I found out what kind of audio I had.I went to their site and installed their vista audio drivers,Let me know if it worked
