Default Radeon 9550X help

When I reinstalled Windows ME on an old hard drive I found, my screen colors appear distorted. I can't get out of 16 color mode. When I try to install the ATI Radeon 9550 software, it tells me to install a standard VGA driver. I went to the device manager, ran the "found new hardware" and installed the VGA driver, but ATI program still won't install. I then installed the driver from the CD using the Found New Hardware Wizard, and it installed smoothly, but I am still stuck with 16 colors. Any words of advice?

It sounds like an ME didn't install fully locking Windows into the 16bit mode. Make sure the driver set and catalyst are correct for ME and not XP. If you are using the original ATI software/driver disk browse through the folders until you find the one for ME. Also run the "sfc /scannow" command at the Run prompt while having the ME installation disk in your cd or dvd drive used for reinstalling Windows. The verification tool will also replace any necessary system files that didn't copy fully or never went on.

That's the thing, ME came preinstalled (no CD) and this card is not the one that came with the computer.

Did you add the 9550 to a system running onboard or just an older AGP card swapped out for this? If the onboard if that was used is still set in the bios to the active and not disabled that will cause immediate problems. The removal of those drivers or a set for an older card replaced is needed too. The thing I can ask here however is how you were able to reinstall ME without at least a recovery disk that comes along with prebuilt systems?
