I purchased a stick of ram about a week ago and received it today, it is a 128m 266mhz DDR ram. I have 2 slots in my system and currently am using a 256m 266mhz DDR ram, my problem is when I install the 128 stick my computer won't start up, it trys to then stops and keeps trying. Can I use a 128 and 256 stick together? or is there something wrong with the stick of 128?
I tried the 128 by itself and the computer won't start, out the 256 in and it works fine put both in and the computer won't start.

Help Please, I purchased this stick on ebay so I have limited time to return it if it defective.

Try using Memtest, but it seems that there is definitely something wrong with it. I would have it replaced.

Can't run memtest with that stick in because the computer won't even start with it in.

Can you add ram to a computer that is running or does it have to be shut down. I am curious as to what would happen if I tried installing the stick with the system running to see if it would work then.

no unfortunately ram is not plug and play! or hot swappable.

oses also need ram to boot into.

So I guess it's safe to say it's dead.....done...finished....fried.....damn...

Funeral services will be sunday at 12:00 pm if anyone wants to attend...

Just my luck....I have 2 more modules coming please don't let them be dead to....

Although I can't say for sure, I would think it'd be wise not to mess with your computer while it's got electricity running through it.

Does ram have to be compatible with your motherboard in order to work?

I never knew it did...The ram I posted about in this thread is a elixer brand ram and the person I purchased from tells me that is the reason it won't work in my computer...is that true?

I always thought ram was ram... and that as long as it was DDR and the same MHZ non ecc 184 pin that it would be all the same.

My board is a dell does that make a difference below are the specs for it:

Mainboard and chipset
Motherboard manufacturer Dell Computer Corporation
Motherboard model 07W080, A00
BIOS vendor Mitac International
BIOS revision A01
BIOS release date 12/17/2002
Chipset Intel i845GL rev. B1
Southbridge Intel 82801DB (ICH4) rev. 2

If this is the case then the ram is no good to me cause the seller won't return it being that the ram is fine, just the specs are not right and this makes it my fault.

If so does anyone want to buy a stick of 128 DDR ram?

As long as it's the right type of RAM (184-pin DDR) it should work fine but you never know what Dell might do to their stuff so that you have to buy upgrades from them
