Default windows randomly shuts down

so almost everytime I use my computer my windows xp all of a sudden pops up with a blue screen that says something about an error in the registry and it needs to perform a memory dump or something and then just restarts. It's really annoying and i need to fix this problem. also, when i start the computer, a black screen comes up before the windows xp booting screen that says pxe rom error or something of that sort. it says realtek media device and network device can not be found. i know that is my ethernet card but there is nothing wrong with it, it works fine. ANY help would be appriciated. thanks.

You are seeing driver errors for the onboard audio as well as another software driver for perhaps your video card or some program installed. XP has it's own form of crash control that will auto boot the system if a program crashes on you. That registry value can be disabled as well as finding the offending driver.

One place to look for special instruction on editing the system registry to control system restarts of this type along with controlling memory dumps in XP and previous versions of Windows is seen at http://www.pctools.com/guides/registry/id/141/

Another tool included in Windows since 98 is the system file checker to see if any basic system files are caught up in the problem you are seeing there. If you have an XP recovery or full install disk onhand type "sfc /scannow" in at the Run prompt off of the Start menu and press enter to start that with the disk in the drive. That will verify the installation and then look to repair or replace any of the basic files found damaged or missing. Posting the esact error messages seen can also help in locating troubleshooting information for you there.

Download the latest drivers for your onboard audio and your Ethernet card, uninstall the drivers that you have now, reboot and install the new ones and see if that fixes it.

Since no one has asked about system specifications as far as make and model if a prebuilt system the HP page on the PXE Error codes found at http://h18013.www1.hp.com/products/s.../00000138.html will help identify the actual problem for HP and some others.

An additional list if not HP can be looked over at http://www.emboot.com/faq-pxe.shtml
