Question audio w/ wista ?!?!!?!?

ok i jsut installed vista on to my computer, i built my computer myself, and it says

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.

has neone had this problem with Vista ???

What sound device you have? Have you installed the drivers?

That message could be seen with any version of Windows that runs one version of WMP or another since WIN 95 days. If you are able to hear sound outside of WMP the file itself may not be able to plsy due to the format it is in. Many drivers are finally now starting to come out for Vista in the finished not beta versions. Are you running onboard sound, a pci expansion card like a Creative Soun Blaster, or a usb type?

With onboad sounc one thing you will have to look into is whether that is enabled or disabled in the bios setup. Look over the bios section in the user manual to see just where the setting for this is. On most boards you will see an advanced or advanced chipset section once you are in there. You scroll ot that and open that up to see the vertical listings of all settings for the various board related items.

Scroll down until you see the sound or onboard item and press enter after hiighlighting that to see if it is set as on or enabled. Hopefully that's all it will turn out to be. That will prevent any sound since you are using the board's audio output directly and not a pci or usb type device. The worst would be a bad chip on the board if the correct drivers went on without problem.

Also, check Device Manager and see if there is anything listed there. If its just a driver problem, odds are you'd see a yellow exclamation point notifying you of a problem.

If that's the case, just go to you motherboard manufacturer's website and get drivers.

Did you run a Vista compatibility check on your system before you installed Vista???
If you have an older audio card it will not be compatible and Vista will not recognize it. That may be your problem.
