flash is solid state media - resistant to loads of shock, poratble hard drive isnt. portable hard drives are bigger and have bigger storage. both use usb. flash is extremly portable, fits in ur pocket, whereas 3.5 inch portable hds are not as portable, most require a plug to power it as batteries would drain quickly.
