Default Audio problems after installing latest WMP (11.0)

I am running Win XP Home Edition on a PC.

Just after installing the new version of Windows Media Player (11.0) I now can't listen to music, both iTunes and WMP doesn't play files.

Upon opening iTunes a message comes up saying "iTunes has detected a problem with your audio configuration. Audio/Visual playback may not operate properly"

And upon opening WMP, the message I am getting is "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly."

The only thing I've done recently is installed the updated WMP 11.0 which caused these problems. I have now upgraded the Realteck AC'97 driver (driver date: 08.03.2007 & driver version: 5.10.0.6230) hoping that it will fix the problem but to no avail.

Can anyone shed some light on this problem? Is there anything else I can do in 'sounds and audio devices' of the control panel to fix this?
