need help with converting

I'm trying to convert a movie I downloaded to ipod format. There are about 50 files and some examples of file names are "nwd7.xvid-tws.r39", "nwd7.xvid-tws.r47." I downloaded a program which said it could convert xvid videos, but when I browsed to find those files, it would not show them. One of the files I was able to watch with VideoLan (the video player I use), but I had no luck with the others. I have tried a few converting programs but none actually convert them. What program should I use/ what should I do?
BTW, the vid I got to play ended with ".rar" if that will help.
