ah... well I was hoping for maybe some particular examples of free anti-virus or anti-spyware software that anyone has actually found to be useful...

AVG is good, would probably use it but when i was installing Vista it came up with compatiability issues, i dont know if these have been resolved, but Avast! is making me nice and safe anyway i suggest Avast!
