Linux is VERY different from Win, if you want to try linux, it will take some time to get familiar to the filesystem and command line interface. i think win and linux are heading different directions, win is more concentrating on the user-friendly interface, but linux is focusing on performance and efficiency. you can definitely do the job faster on a linux machine than a win machine.

if you just want to try a more safe or stable os,i think mac os is the better choice, not linux. linux will take you a long time to get used to, and even longer to work fast with it.
