Default SATA Hard Drive Problem...

I recently bought myself a new Seagate 320GB 7200RPM 16mb SATA Hard Drive, which i am going to use as my new primary drive and start a clean slate.

The problem i'm having is that when i connect it and try to turn my computer on, my pc boots up for about half a second and then turns itself off... Even if i turn it on with the power cable not connected and then connect it when the computer is on, it just turns of as soon as it contacts the molex connector.

My current PSU dosent have a SATA connection so im having to use one of them sata adapters which plugs in to a spare molex connector. I should be getting a new PSU soon though.

Does anybody know what the problem is?

Also could somebody explain what the RAID function is when setting up a hard drive and do i need it.

Many Thanks
Sam.
