Building Gaming Server... Need Help

I have recently decided that i want to attempt at building a server to act as a gaming server (ie: "C&C: Renegade") and possibly pull double duty and power a website as well. But i don't know where to start for hardware. I'm looking a spending around $1000. If anybody could please give me any suggestions as i know some of you probably have experience in this field.

Here is a parts list of what i found

1. AMD Opteron 1218 Santa Ana 2.6GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM2 ($335 newegg.com)
2. ASUS M2N-LR AM2 NVIDIA nForce Professional 3600 Motherboard ($220 newegg.com)
3. Kingston 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 800 Dual Channel Memory ($152 newegg.com)
4. Maxtor Ultra 16 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA Hard Drive ($150 newegg.com)

This for now is the list that i am looking at and where i found them if anybody has any advice or better parts please let me know

To run a Renegade server, you don't need anything over the top like that. I have hosted on on my pc and it ran fine for 16 people. Could do more now with the additional ram.

this is true. your bandwidth will be more of a issue then the system you run it on.

Do you mean like a Dedicated server that never shuts down?

Yes i would like to run a dedicated server with at least 40 slots. And also maybe be able to power a website to back the gaming server.

Yea, its mostly internet dependant. What kind of internet do you have? I have TONS of experience with making Renegade servers.

Pay a hosting service that hosts gaming servers to provide both the hardware and the bandwidth. I assume you want to host this on the internet? Almost all broadband ISP companies severely limit your upload speeds, which would kill connections to the server almost immediately. They do this because they want you to pay for business class DSL/Cable to get the higher upload speeds.

You are better off paying a company that already has these abilities to host everything, unless you want to pay more each month for a static IP and the higher bandwidth. You could have the highest spec server in the world but with a basic home broadband connection will make it useless.

Hes right. However, if you want to be able to host a small game, say 16 people, that would work, depending on your internet connection.

probably not considering like the average upload is capped at like 400k or abouts, and that would be shared to each client connected. Even if you have 1 full mbit upstream that would still be shared to your 16 clients, probably going to be laggy.
